The drive is designed such that the outer frame should be hard mounted to the host equipment; no additional/external shock mounts should be used. Recommended orientation is vertical on either side, or horizontal with the Device Electronics board down; other mounting orientations may be used. No matter what mounting orientation is used, Micropolis specifies that the maximum HDA casting temperature not exceed 60*C (140*F). Mounting Screws --------------- 3 per side 6-32 UNC-2B thru 4 on bottom 6-32 UNC-2B thru Caution: The mounting screws must be selected so that they do not penetrate the bottom mounting holes by more than 0.20 inches or the side mounting holes by more than 0.156 inches. Screws that are too long will short to PCBA components and/or prevent proper operation of the shock mount system and may damage the HDA. Interface Electrical Characteristics ------------------------------------ Interface control, data, and status signals are TTL compatible in both send and receive directions. Maximum cable length is 18 inches. The following cable specification are provided to ensure system integrity. Driver IOL sink current = 12 milliamps (minimum) Driver IOH source current is -400 microamps (maximum) Cable capacitive loading = 200 picofarads (maximum) Signal Connector J1 ------------------- J1 is a 40-pin connector. This power connector is usually used by low-power computer systems. Mating Connector: MOLEX 5480 or equivalent The pin assignment differ from the pin assignment specified in the current ATA Specification in order to maintain compatibility with industry-standard conventions. J3 DC Power Connector ---------------------- J3 is a 4-pin, keyed, AMP MATE-N-LOCK connector. Both +5V and +12V are supplied to the drive via this connector. Adjustments and Maintenance --------------------------- 2112A drives requires no adjustments or periodic maintenance; additionally, no mechanical adjustments are required to prepare a system for handling or shipment. Field-Replacable Components --------------------------- The concept of repair by replacement of complete functional components is utilized in the 2112A, resulting in an MTTR of less than 15 minutes. ********************************************************************** F E A T U R E S ********************************************************************** MICROPL. 2217A/2210A/2205A PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 135864 REV. A Description ----------- These drive models provide users with high-speed, random access data storage and meets the needs of diverse application environments. The drives are compatible with the proposed ANSI ATA (AT Attachment) specification. 32 to 40 MHz internal data transfer rate - highest performance AT/IDE drive available in the industry. Command Overhead less than 180 milliseconds On-the-fly error detection and correction using Reed-Solomon Code. Industry-leading 512K, 8-segment cache buffer... Low-level formatted at the factory How to Access Large Capacity IDE Disk Driver -------------------------------------------- Many disk drive users think that the IDE interface cannot be used with high capacity disk drives. This is absolutely not so! The Disk Operating System (DOS) provides for the file system stored in the disk drive. The application programs access the disk drives by activating specific DOS interrupts. The DOS interrupt service program activates the DOS disk drive device driver that services disk access request. The DOS driver activates the BIOS interrupt 13H. The BIOS program services disk access request by activating the disk drive IDE interface commands. The ONTRACK MANAGER utility software including the following features: a. Automated installation and setup b. Driver software for single drive 1 GB operation c. Read/Write multiple sector performance driver Set Drive Parameters Command ---------------------------- - Drive types are used by BIOS. Saved in CMOS memory - The user can define the drive types - Both host and drives are powered up together - The host issues a "set drive parameters" command to set the number of sectors per track and the maximum head address - The drive calculates the number of logical cylinders based on its capacity DOS to BIOS Communication ------------------------- The DOS device driver accesses the disk drive for read or write by setting the parameter block and the command code in the 80xx6 microprocessor registers and then activating BIOS Interrupt 13H. DOS can also interrogate the disk drive parameters by setting a specific command code in the 80286 register, activating Interrupt 13H, and the reading the disk drive parameters from the communication registers. The communication registers used to interrogate the disk drive parameters are defined in the following table. +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The disk drive capacity DOS can access via Interrupt 13H is | | limited to 8.4 GByte. This limitation stems from the DOS-to- | | BIOS communication register. | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The maximum number of cylinders that can be addressed by using| | Interrupt 13H is 1024 (10 bits). | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The maximum number of heads that can be addressed by using | | Interrupt 13H is 256 (8 bits) | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The maximum number of sectors that can be addressed by using | | Interrupt 13H is 63 (6 bits can provide for 64 sectors but | | sector number 0 is not used) | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | Multiplying through yields 1024 x 256 x 63 x 512 = 8.4 GB | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ BIOS to IDE Communication ------------------------- The BIOS communicates with the disk drives via the IDE interface. The IDE interface provides for 1 bit of drive address allowing for two IDE drives to connect to the BIOS, 16 bits of cylinder address, 4 bits of head address, and 8 bits of sector number. The disk drive capacity that BIOS can access via the IDE interface is limited to 136.9 GByte. This limitation is set by the IDE inter- face parameter registers as shown in the following table. +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The maximum number of cylinders that can be addressed by using| | the IDE interface is 65536 (16 bis). | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The maximum number of heads that can be addressed by using | | the IDE interface is 16 (4 bis). | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The maximum number of sectors that can be addressed by using | | the IDE interface is 255 (8 bis can provide for 256 sectors | | but sector number 0 is not used). | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | The sector size is fixed at 512 data bytes per sector. | | Multiplying through yield 65536 x 16 x 255 x 512 = 136.9 GB | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ Existing BIOS Disk Addressing Limit ----------------------------------- The existing BIOS designs receive the cylinder address, head address, and sector number from DOS and pass them to the IDE disk drive. Be- cause the IDE interface is limited to 16 heads and the DOS-to-BIOS interface is limited to 1024 cylinders and 63 sectors the PC disk addressing capabilities is limited to: 1024 x 16 x 63 x 512 = 528.5 MB As one can see, that the limitation is because existing BIOS designs pass the disk drive parameters provided by DOS to the IDE disk drive. Disk Drive Types in the CMOS Memory ----------------------------------- The CMOS memory is a battery backed up storage used to hold configur- ation information. The CMOS memory saves the number of disk drives installed in the PC and the disk drive type information. The disk drive type information consists of the number of cylinders, the number of heads, and the number of sectors per head that the disk drive has. Other disk drive type information (such as the landing zone address) are not applicable to this discussion. The BIOS can calculate the capacity of the disk drive from the CMOS parameters. BIOS Power Up Sequence ---------------------- On power up, the BIOS program is activated by the computer hardware. The BIOS program establishes the interrupt vectors (interrupt service routine memory addresses) for the BIOS calls. After the default values are in place, the BIOS program scans for additional BIOS modules installed on adapter cards. The additional BIOS modules gain control and establish or intercept interrupt vectors to hook them- selves into the system. The additionally BIOS modules can provide extended functionality, or specifically, can change the Interrupt 13H interface characteristics.
